Infants and Toddlers

  • A primary concern is neglect due to parent’s:
    • failure to build an a emotional attachment with the child
    • use of alcohol or drugs to cope with the stress of living with abuse
    • inadequate nutrition or sleep deprivation resulting in low energy and inability to focus
    • injuries making it difficult to get around

    These children may also experience:

    • exaggerated startle reflex – extreme reaction to noise or sudden movement
    • fear and instability which may inhibit their curiosity, exploration of their world, and play
    • inconsolable crying which can also put them at increased risk for child abuse including shaken baby syndrome
    • problems with feeding, sleep, and emotional attachment to parents
