The National Child Maltreatment Symposium is specificaly designed for multidisciplinary teams working in the area of child maltreatment. Our focus will be to identify the ways in which multidisciplinary child abuse investigation teams have evolved to effectively and successfully work in the best interests of children.

The symposium will be held in three stages, over four days, participants can select which phases are most applicable to their work

  • November 25, 2012 will be Advanced Practices in Child Maltreatment Section of the Canadian Pediatric Society for Pediatricians who work extensively in the area of child maltreatment.
  • November 26 and 27, 2012 specifically targets new and established teams from across Canada and focuses on the importance of Justice, Child Protection, Police, and Health forming collaborative partnerships when dealing with cases of child maltreatment.
  • November 28, 2012  provides an opportunity for participants interested in developing a Child Advocacy Center, to have an intense learning experience with members of the Zebra Child Protection Centre multi-disciplinary team.  This day will focus on the collaboration strategies of this team focusing on their practices, common understandings and the continuum of support provided through this child-centred, child-focused community response model.

About Us

Alberta Network for Safe and Healthy Children
This is a  provincial network consisting of stakeholders from a variety of sectors and disciplines including health, social work, enforcement, childcare, and high-risk community outreach.

Our goal is to provide a structure that can lead to increased support for families and communities to ensure that children in Alberta grow up healthy and free from abuse or neglect. We want to honour the fact that most people do the best job they can as parents but sometimes feel as though they lack enough experience, support, information, or patience.

Priorities include:

  • Developing or identifying materials that help parents understand and respond to their child’s needs.
  • To encourage parents to take good care of themselves. Parents sometimes feel it is selfish to take time away from their child to relax or have fun. The reality is, if Mom and Dad are exhausted and stressed it is even harder for them to parent in a positive and healthy way.

Please go to Projects to learn more about our current work.

We hope you will check back to the site often and connect to our Community Calendar to see upcoming conferences and events for parents and professionals.

If you have an interest in this initiative please contact the Provincial Coordinator.
